College Fjords in Prince William Sound, Alaska

My brother went on a back to back Alaskan cruise these last two weeks in May. He is cruising on the NCL Jade and loves cruising with Norwegian but if we could help it, we would never cruise with them again. He got on the ship in Vancouver, BC and cruised up to Whittier, Alaska and now he is on his way back. It is a mirror itinerary which means he is seeing the same ports twice. I was surprised to hear that his ship did not visit the College Fjords. Perhaps it is still frozen and the ship cannot enter or the ship is too large and cannot cruise through there. It is a narrow path and often, there is only one ship in the area at one time.

When I took my parents to an Alaskan cruise in 2005, we flew up to Anchorage, Alaska and hired a limo to drive us from the airport to Whittier where the cruise port was. The limo ride was special and it gave my folks the chance to ride like a couple of celebrities. They wore sunglasses and had a glass of champagne in their hands. (I have to find a photo of them to share with you) My mom and dad loved it.

From Whittier, we cruised to the College Fjords and spent the day there. It was glorious. The College Fjords is in the Prince William Sound. It is about 38km long and only 3 to 5km wide. It is called that because all the glaciers there are named after a US College. At its head, it divides into the Harvard arm and the Yale arm.

We cruised the Harvard arm first and when we reached the glacier, the ship came to a halt so that we could admire the sheer size of the glacier and the surroundings. It was really beautiful. It was so still out there. The water was barely moving, with chunks of ice floating by. It was hard to judge how big these chunks of ice were. We heard they were the size of a bus.

In my opinion, you haven't seen Alaska until you've been to the College Fjords. A lot of my friends think by taking the Inside Passage to Alaska, they have seen Alaska but not really. Seeing Glacier Bay is great but you have to see the Harvard Glacier and the Yale Glacier. Spending the day drifting around the College Point and in the Harvard arm s really something.

Wildlife is an abundance here too. Here is an otter that popped his head up when I was taking a picture.

Sea lions resting on ice.

The scenery is so spectacular there. Everywhere you turn, you see a snow capped mountain or a glacier.

We love going to Alaska because of the scenery. I would love to return to the College Fjords one day. Have you been there? We would love to hear about it, please drop me a comment.
