Forgotten Visit in Delta, BC

A lot of people have driven through the George Massey tunnel connecting Delta to Richmond but how many knew that the Queen of England officially open it back in 1959? I bet you not many. The Deas Tunnel was renamed to George Massey in 1967 by WAC Bennet following the death of George Massey. George Massey was a champion of the project and had a significant role in advocating for the use of an immersed tunnel technology in BC.

The plaque as it stands today. Both the Queen and the platform the plaque used to stand on are gone.

Sadly the plaque is worn down by the elements.

Today the area is a nice walking path with scenic viewpoints of Richmond and the Fraser River. It is tranquil and serene, not busy because it is out of the way. Next time you're in Vancouver, BC, take a drive out to the George Massey tunnel. The Deas Island park is on the east side of Highway 99. It is easier going there if you're on Highway 17 north.
