Weta in Auckland, New Zealand

Step inside the magic: Weta Workshop Unleashed is Auckland's ultimate film experience. This behind-the-scenes experience offers a thrilling dive into Oscar-winning special effects, sci-fi creatures and creative storytelling.

Before going to Auckland, New Zealand, we have never heard of Weta Workshops. It was only after watching a youtube video on Weta did we know it was the creative services and talented team behind the creation of the creatures in the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit movies.

We love the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit movies and it is always fun to see how movie making works, especially when it comes to the monsters and creatures that appeared in these movies.

We didn't go to the tour but we went to the Weta Workshop store which was in the same in complex as the Auckland Tower. The store had props from the movies. See if you recognize any of these characters.

The store was fully stocked with props and fan memorabilia. The statue below was extremely detailed and I would love to have it displayed in our den but it was a bit too heavy to carry back from Auckland and it was a bit pricey. 

Death riders, black riders or Nazgul, servants of Sauron who were once men corrupted by the Nine Rings of Power.


Next time I'm in Wellington or Auckland, I will try to visit Weta Workshop and go on its tour. Also there is Hobbiton, the little village and shire where the Hobbit was filmed. I've also heard there are various filming locations in New Zealand that are easily accessible or can be hiked to from the road. First thing first, learn how to drive on the other side of the road then second, return to New Zealand to explore some more. It would be an experience to go on a Lord of the Rings filming tour in New Zealand.

Best Fish and Chips in a Small Town, Picton, New Zealand

Picton was one of the smallest port we had ever visited but it was more than quaint. When we looked outside our port window, we saw piles and piles of logs. These logs were stacked up high and there were plenty of them.  A shuttle was provided to take us into town. The explanation of the logs were that these logs were going to be sent to China to be used to create toothpicks, chopsticks and matches. That was surprising to hear.  After being dropped off, we walked along the shoreline until we found this bridge that spanned the marina. This was the Coathanger bridge. Originally built in 1907 as the Victoria Domain bridge, it was replaced in 1950 as the Coathanger bridge.  The Picton marina was peaceful and really fun to walk through. It was hard to imagine the population was only 7,990 and with us visiting, the population was close to 10,000 for the day. Palace of the Grand Master in Rhodes, Greece

When we left the ship to explore Rhodes, we walked along a road that had the ocean on the right and the city wall on the left.  It was a quiet day like if it was a holiday or something. We crossed the road and walked up to a cathedral that was in ruins. There were a lot of feral cats there and nothing else. We continued to explore the area and found a large square and a long cobblestone road that led to a large medieval castle. The Palace of the Grand Master is where the administrative center of the Order of the Knights of Saint John were. It was built in the 7th century as a Byzantine citadel but in 1856, lightning strucked a gunpowder magazine and exploded. It killed many people and caused the upper floors of the palace to collapse. The lower floors survived but nothing on the upper floors did.
